The Dam Store Café — Branding, Signage & Photography

The Dam Store Café project is especially meaningful to me because it tells a story of loss, resilience, and starting over. After the collapse of the Rapidan Dam destroyed the Hruska family’s home and longtime business, The Rapidan Dam Store, David Hruska took me to the wreckage to photograph the aftermath. Those photographs became part of documenting the history behind their new beginning.

When the family rebuilt, I wanted the new identity to honor what came before rather than simply create something new. A painting by local artist and family friend Marian Anderson, rescued from the building before evacuation, became an important piece of that story. I photographed the original painting, carefully isolated elements from it, and combined those shapes with a similar typeface and the distinctive arc of the original wagon wheel to create the The Dam Store Café logo. I carried that identity through the exterior signage, window graphics, and photography, creating a visual connection between the beloved old store, the devastation of the flood, and the family’s resilient new chapter.
